SICILIAN CYCLING CAMP
One week of training, riding, eating & drinking in southern Sicily
The best way to start a season is to start it early. The Monti Iblei are some of the most challenging terrain in Sicily. No wonder the locals keep these secrets to themselves. Adams & Peabody is taking cyclists to where there is lots of space…and lots of fabulous pasta. Over 25,000 vertical feet in just one week will put you at the top of the game when the cycling season is beginning. Or prolong your season in the fall and carry your good form all through the winter. The weather in Sicily is sunny and warm with temperatures in the low 70s. With long distances and delicious dinners, you’ll ask yourselves why you didn’t think of this before. Do you like a challenge? Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

DAY 1 – 2 25 mi / 50 mi
Arucimeli Resort is located outside the village of Giarratana in the valley basin of an extinct volcano: Monte Lauro. We will get everyone checked into their rooms before our informal introductions and lunch on the veranda. After a short ride around the village center of Giarratana, we’ll begin to get a taste of the hills that await us this week. After Ragusa we will continue south towards the coast, downhill. We ride by the infamous castle of Donnafugata: named after a runaway damsel. We’ll continue down trough carob and almond groves all the way to the bustling center of Marina di Ragusa along the coast.
DAY 3 – 4 60 mi / 39 mi
Monte Lauro is one of Sicily’s best-kept secrets. This extinct volcano creates many microclimates resulting in abundant amounts of valley fruits and vegetables. The hills don’t end as we roll towards the famous wine-producing region of Chiaramonte Gulfi. Home to the “Tonda Iblea” olive, the scenery this morning is through lucious olive groves.
DAY 5 – 6 36 mi / 56 mi
A quick spin brings us to the high plateau of Modica Alta. The ride itself bobs through carob trees and almond fields on quiet country roads. Abandoned castles and dry-stone-walls speckle the countryside as we make our way to the beautiful baroque city of Modica. The ancient Greek center of Palazzolo Acreide is complete with its beautiful amphitheater. The Santoni – statues carved into the rock of this ancient Akrai – belonged to the Magna Mater: one of the most mysterious cults of antiquity.
DAY 7 25 mi
A quick spin up to the village of San Giacomo. It is a simple route to exercise the legs before your travel day begins. The descent from San Giacomo is thrilling and worth every switchback. We will transfer the group to Catania in the late morning.
