tuscan cycling camp
chianti hills & abbeys, strade bianche history & and delicious chianti classico
Chianti is best characterized by pristine riding conditions like sweeping curvy roads and the legendary strade bianche. With incredible scenery in every direction, Tuscany is a jewel adorned with lovely medieval villages and narrow, cobbled streets; lush vineyards, old castles, historic abbeys – and plenty of hills. With gradients from leg crushing 20% gravel grinders to roadways resembling cruisy roller coasters, there is plenty for everyone. One thing you will not find in Chianti easily are flat stretches of road. We can’t wait to introduce you to the locals, share our favorite places, and stop for a jolt of espresso in one of the many charming medieval piazzas. In the evenings, we share our road-stories, cin-cin with our wine glasses filled with Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, and enjoy hearty Tuscan fare such as Bistecca alla Fiorentina or Ribollita.

DAY 1 – 2 23 mi / 44 mi
Begin your journey with one of our favorite – short yet very sweet – coffee rides. We climb a nearby remote mountain full of chestnut groves, through thickly wooded areas, and rocket downhill on an exhilarating, sweeping decent for many miles, past olive groves and medieval villages. You will ride on roads only local gravel riders know, and experience the thrill of going on truly the road less travelled. Hidden gems are all along this route, from stunning cypress lined Strade Bianche, to beautiful vineyards.
DAY 3 – 4 50 mi / 68 mi
Our day begins with a roll through the cobbled streets of the three medieval villages which make up the Lega del Chianti. This route is at moments challenging yet relaxing at the same time. There is a good mix of terrain between challenging climbs and stunning descents. Prepare yourself for a once in a lifetime experience, to be savored with each pedal stroke. Our itinerary is both unforgiving yet rewarding – with stunning views of open landscapes and vineyards near Siena. The cypress lined lanes, dotted with small medieval villages, accompany us along the way.
DAY 5 – 6 53 mi / 40 mi
The lunar landscapes awaiting you today are like nothing you’ve ever seen. Cruise one of Italy’s most beautiful roads. There is an open, very spacious feeling as you careen by bike on a road with velvety tarmac. Enjoy a picturesque ride on the Chiantigiana road all the way to Siena’s cobblestone lined streets. We’ll experience a cruise into the Centro by bike, along the fashionable Via Banchi di Sopra then into the Piazza del Campo. Soak in the medieval atmosphere of Siena, enjoy an artisanal gelato perhaps then return to the Gaiole area, via backroads, only local riders know.
DAY 7 15 mi
Today’s morning spin takes us to the legendary Abbey of the De Medici clan. Badia a Coltibuono sits high in the hills of Chanti, just above the reknown olive oil producing Gaiole in Chianti. It is within these walls the prestigious Riserve Storiche ages: a prised wine from the Chianti hills, whose vines were planted in the 1930s. Enjoy a late-morning cappuccino and cornetto before returning to our hotel.
